How to Change the Theme in Moodle

There are three steps to changing the theme in Moodle like downloading the theme, installing the theme, and applying the theme. Here’s a complete explanation:

Step 1: Download Moodle Theme

The first step is to download a Moodle theme from the official website on the Plugins page. There are many free themes available for you to use.

      1. Open the page https://moodle.org/plugins/
      2. Change the filter to Themes.

After a successful installation, the theme does not apply automatically. You need to change the Moodle theme from the old one to the new one. Here’s how to change the theme in Moodle:

  2. After accessing the Select device page, click Change theme on the row of the currently active theme.
  3. On the theme you will install, Click Use theme.
  4. If the theme preview is visible and there are no issues, Click Continue.

How to Resolve Errors When Installing a Theme in Moodle

During our first attempt to install a theme in Moodle, we encountered two issues: (1) the theme was incompatible with the Moodle version, and (2) the theme was corrupted.

Incompatible themes prevent the installation process from completing successfully. Here are some examples:

The message in the image above indicates that the installed theme has an error, preventing it from being applied. The error message states:

Validating [nama tema] ... Error
 [Error] Required Moodle version [2024044400]
Installation aborted due to validation failure

To resolve this, click Cancel, then search for another theme that is compatible with your Moodle version. If you really want that particular theme, you can consider upgrading your Moodle version.

For issues with a corrupted theme—such as incorrect display—you can simply switch to another theme. Make sure to choose a theme from a developer who actively updates their work.
